Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra's Battery Life Tested: Outperforms iPhone 15 Pro Max by a Mile

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has retained the impressive 5,000 mAh battery featured in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, yet its longevity on a single charge surpasses expectations. In fact, it outshines the iPhone 15 Pro Max, known for its commendable battery life, making the S24 Ultra a new benchmark for flagship smartphones, especially beyond the gaming phone category.

At Tom's Guide, we rigorously evaluate smartphones using our proprietary battery test, which involves web surfing over a 5G connection at 150 nits of screen brightness. Devices earning a spot on our best phone battery life list typically last 12 hours or more. However, the Samsung S24 Ultra has set a new standard for flagships.

In the Galaxy S24 Ultra's battery test results:

- **Phone:** Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

- **Chipset:** Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

- **Battery Size:** 5,000 mAh

- **Battery Life:** 16 hours and 45 minutes

Comparing this to other devices:

- Asus ROG Phone 8 (Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, 5,500 mAh): 18 hours and 48 minutes

- Google Pixel 8 Pro (Tensor G3, 5,050 mAh): 10 hours and 3 minutes

- iPhone 15 Pro (A17 Pro, 3,274 mAh): 10 hours and 53 minutes

- iPhone 15 Pro Max (A17 Pro, 4,422 mAh): 14 hours and 2 minutes

- Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, 5,000 mAh): 12 hours and 22 minutes (adaptive) / 13 hours and 9 minutes (60Hz)

During the initial testing phase, the Galaxy S24 Ultra demonstrated exceptional endurance, lasting an impressive 16 hours and 45 minutes with its display set to adaptive mode. This mode allows the screen to dynamically scale from 1 to 120Hz. Notably, this runtime exceeds that of its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, by over 4 hours.

The S23 Ultra, when set to 60Hz mode, can last up to 13 hours and 9 minutes, offering a compromise for users who prioritize extended battery life over a smoother display. Further testing will assess the S24 Ultra's performance in 60Hz mode.

In comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro Max achieved a commendable 14 hours and 2 minutes in the Tom's Guide battery test. While this is impressive, it falls nearly 3 hours short of the S24 Ultra's endurance. The Pixel 8 Pro, on the other hand, lagged behind with a runtime of 10 hours and 3 minutes, more than 6 hours less than Samsung's latest flagship.

While the Asus ROG Phone 8, another Snapdragon 8 Gen 3-powered device, holds the title for the longest-lasting phone, the S24 Ultra's battery life stands out as one of the best, considering its non-gaming phone category.

The notable battery life difference between the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and its predecessor, the Galaxy S23 Ultra, can be attributed to the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. Qualcomm's promise of 25% better efficiency with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 seems to be validated by these extraordinary results.

Additionally, there's positive news on the charging front. Using a 45W USB-C charger, the Galaxy S24 Ultra achieved a 71% charge in just 30 minutes, surpassing the 41% achieved with a 20W Apple charger.

In summary, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra stands as one of the longest-lasting phones to date, combining impressive battery life with efficient charging capabilities.
